Great teeth and gum care starts at home. Brushing and flossing on a daily basis is the best way to take care of your teeth and gums, and helps minimize the risk of periodontal disease and tooth decay as you age. Regular dental exams and fluoride treatments are also key to successfully preventing gum disease and tooth decay.
Periodontal disease is a chronic infection of the gums and bone surrounding the teeth. This serious infection happens when bacterial plaque causes inflammation. The bacterial infection and inflammation slowly destroy the gum, bone, and tissue. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Some risk factors include: family history, smoking, stress, hormonal changes, diabetes, and poor oral health.
We recommend using a soft toothbrush with a small head since medium and hard brushes tend to cause irritation and can contribute to recession of the gums. A small head allows you to get around each tooth more completely and is less likely to injure your gums. Our dentists and hygienists can demonstrate the ideal way to brush your teeth twice a day. A motorized toothbrush is very good. We can recommend some at our office.
Plaque bacteria and sugars submit your teeth to acid attacks which break down the minerals in your teeth. If enough minerals are not replaced through food and water consumption your teeth will decay. Fluoride helps to strengthen your teeth and deters the bacteria from causing damage.
Braces would fix the problem, but some people don't want to wear braces if they don't have to. Come in for a consultation with one of our dentists and see if veneers would be a better option for you. Veneers are fabricated using strong, durable materials and then placed over the front of your existing teeth. The end result is a natural looking smile that you will be happy to show off.
